The company was established in 1899 in Pennsylvania as the reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing company by John Barbey and a group of investors. The company was renamed Vanity Fair Silk Mills, Inc in 1920, but then dropped the word “silk” from its name due to an embargo on this material during WWII.
In 1969, the company entered the denim category and acquired the H.D. Lee Company and renamed itself the VF Corporation. In 1986 the company doubled its size acquiring Blue Bell which included the Wrangler, JanSport, and Red Kapo brands. It became the world’s largest publicly traded apparel company.
VF moved its corporate headquarters from Pennsylvania to Greensboro, North Carolina — home of the Wrangler brand — while continuing its growth tradition by acquiring its two largest brands, the North Face and Vans brands, in 2000.
VF established a shared global head corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado for VF Corporate and five of its outdoor brands. (A more detailed company history is available on its website: https://www.vfc.com/our-company/company-history.)
